JOB SUMMARY

Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House seeks a Community Coordinator for Queensbridge Houses to support a resident-driven community organizing initiative in partnership with the Mayor’s Action Plan for Neighborhood Safety (MAP). The coordinator will facilitate collaboration among residents, community partners, and city agencies to address safety and well-being concerns within the Queensbridge House community.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and retain a comprehensive engagement plan, with a clear strategy, benchmarks, and outcomes, to create partnerships and gain a solid understanding of key community priorities.
  • Conduct research and engage experts to create meeting and action agenda’s that introduce residents to a variety of interventions strategies and/or frameworks for community organizing and problem-solving.
  • Facilitate resident and stakeholder planning meetings that support engagement, problem identification, problem-solving, practice and action steps, and memorialize plans in a centralized, digital platform.
  • Plan, lead and co-facilitate public community meetings and direct action organizing activities, as appropriate with MAP Initiative Managers.
  • Co-facilitate and co-organize, with MAP Initiative Managers, city agency, and community partner meetings, and represent resident concerns and proposed solutions.
  • Champion ongoing community outreach and communications to raise awareness of residents’ priorities.
  • Support resident voice and resident advocacy for policy change by defining challenges and identifying opportunities to practice or voice solutions.
  • Support the recruitment of youth council members.
  • Co-develop an annual resident-led project (social program or placekeeping project) with support from key organization staff.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute place-keeping activities, community events/meetings, and direct action activities to address and advocate for community needs and concerns.
  • Complete a comprehensive, monthly narrative report detailing strategies, problem-solving approaches, set-backs, and outcomes;

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work and communicate closely with organization staff, and the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to support and advance all project tasks and timelines.
  • Support in the collection, input, and processing of all necessary documents for resident and volunteer stipends by completing and maintaining stipend agreements, stipend logs, and tracking attendance.
  • Attend in-person, teleconference, virtual meetings, and community events, including; precinct council meetings, community board meetings, and Tenant Association meetings.

Qualifications


STATEMENT OF SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 3 years in a related area, preferably community engagement/organizing and/or community development.
  • Demonstrated success leading logistics, identifying and achieving project goals, quickly, effectively, and successfully in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to identify community issues, needs, feedback, and preferences in a timely manner.
  • Exceptional analytical, written and oral communication, presentation, and writing skills.
  • Demonstrated success in community organizing, grassroots/neighborhood advocacy, and lobbying campaigns.
  • Professional experience engaging multiple public housing communities.
  • Strong aptitude for interpreting data and data trends.
  • In-depth knowledge and familiarity in and around assigned site locations.
  • Sound ability to work with diverse communities in an empathetic, comfortable and non-judgmental manner.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, Power point, Google Suite
  • Strong proficiency in analytical data management

REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be willing to undergo a pre-employment background check.
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work some weekends and evenings.

About Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement

Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement is a community based non-profit organization that offers comprehensive services to the youth, adults, seniors and families in the Western Queens community. The resources, opportunities and support we provide serve as a catalyst for community members to reach their greatest potential and achieve social and economic self-sufficiency. Across our eight program sites, we provide vital services to thousands of community members each year. HISTORY: Jacob A. Riis was a native of Ribe, Denmark, and came to New York City in 1870. Riis's book, "How the Other Half Liv ... es" exposed conditions previously thought not to exist in America. He established the Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House to meet the needs of newly arrived immigrants. In 1897, the Settlement House moved into its first home at 48 Henry St. in lower east Manhattan. Jacob A. Riis Neighborhood Settlement House continued to diversify activities, broadening the scope of activities to include athletics,citizenship classes, and drama. In the 1940s and 50s, the Settlement House began to offer programs for residents of public housing developments in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. At the same time, the original Settlement House building was sold, and in 1950, Jacob A. Riis Settlement House moved all of its activities to the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, Queens. More
